Perodua Recorded 19,000 Bezza Bookings

It’s been barely a month since the launch of the Perodua Bezza sedan and the company has announced that bookings for the Bezza has reached 19,000 units. As of last Friday (12 August), Perodua had already delivered 6,000 of its first sedan to customers.

Perodua Bezza Dashboard_Advance“We are very thankful to the Malaysian public for their support and for choosing us as their automotive brand of choice. We are now focusing our efforts on timely delivery of the Perodua Bezza to our valued customers,” Perodua President and CEO, Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh said.

Thus far, the demand for the Perodua Bezza 1.3L Advance and Bezza 1.3L Premium variants are almost equal at 42% and 43% respectively, and just 15% for the 1.0L variants. This is expected as the Bezza is targeted at young/small families looking for an entry-level sedan; young singles have the option of the Axia or Myvi hatchbacks.

Perodua Bezza TestHowever, Datuk (Dr) Aminar also urged prospective buyers to try out the 1.0L variants as it presents good value-for-money yet isn’t deficient in power. The new 3-cylinder 1.0L engine produces 67 hp and 91 Nm and in a test drive on Perodua’s test track which mimics typical local road conditions i.e. slopes, high-speed stretches, tight corners, etc, the 1.0L variant did not feel underpowered (unless you are expecting sports-car performance) and drove at the highway speed limit with little issue. This is likely due to the lower overall weight (the 1.0L manual weighs in at just 865 kg). The company also claims the 1.0-litre engine can travel 22.8 km per liter of petrol with the manual transmission and 21.3 km/l for the automatic.

The Perodua Bezza is priced from RM37,300 for the 1.0L standard G (manual) to RM50,800 for 1.3L Advanced variant (automatic) and comes in 6 different colors, which include Sugar Brown and Ocean Blue for 1.3L variants, which are new metallic colors for Perodua. Perodua uses eco-friendly water based paint which also provides a better finish.

Yes, you read it right. The ten thousandth Bezza. To be precise, there are 10,200 units of the new Bezza sedan sold as of the morning of 30th August 2016. This impressive figure comes just a little over a month after since the Bezza’s official launch, on the back of an expected soft market.

Perodua Bezza Gear Up AccessoriesToday, Perodua Sales Sdn Bhd Managing Director, Dr Zahari Husin presented a mock key to the 10,000th Bezza buyer, Puan Zetty Aswani Fazwin at a simple ceremony at Perodua Sentral in Petaling Jaya. “We thank Puan Zetty for choosing Perodua as your brand of choice and Bezza as your car of choice. We are currently working to ensure timely delivery of all our models to our valued customers,” Dr Zaharin said.

Puan Zetty is part of the 44% of Bezza buyers who picked the 1.3L Advance variant. The other popular model is the 1.3L Premium X automatic (43%). According to Perodua, over 25,000 bookings for the Bezza have been received since it started accepting bookings on 16 July. Yet despite the overwhelming response to the Bezza, Perodua reported that it only has a minor impact on the sales of their other models like the Axia and Myvi.

“For the month of July, we delivered over 2,600 Bezza in the 10-day period it was launched. So far in August, we have delivered 7,400 units and we will maximize delivery for the convenience of our customers,” added Dr Zahari.

In the first seven months of 2016, Perodua sold 112,500 vehicles, accounting for 35.4% of the total industry volume (TIV) of 317,900 vehicles.

At the presentation ceremony, Perodua also took the opportunity to wish all Malaysians ‘Selamat Hari Merdeka’.

The Daihatsu Perodua Engine Manufacturing Sdn Bhd (DPEM) production plant in Sendayan, Negri Sembilan is now officially open. This engine plant represents a RM 500 million joint venture investment by Daihatsu Motor Co. Ltd. of Japan and national carmaker, Perodua. It is the second significant investment made by Daihatsu in Sendayan after building a transmission plant, Akashi Kikai Industry (M) Sdn Bhd, adjacent to this facility with the objective of setting up a powertrain production hub in Malaysia.

The engine plant sits on 35 acres of land with the plant taking up 5 acres, housing facilities like a prayer room, canteen, locker rooms and hostel, catering to the needs of 202 workers. The plant was officially opened by the Negeri Sembilan Chief Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Haji Hasan who welcomed the investment to promote an economic ecosystem in the state.

Daihatsu Perodua Engine Manufacturing Plant Official Opening, Sendayan“This investment came just in time as the government – both on state level and federal level – is looking to further diversify the country’s income: in line with the right honourable Prime Minister’s call to reduce dependency on oil industry. The best option is to move towards attracting companies that offer cutting edge
technology which will ultimately give added value to the economy,” he said.

DPEM Chairman, YBhg Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin said DPEM, which began operations in May 2016, is the in-house supplier of engine components for the popular Bezza sedan; it has also secured 2 OEM customers and is currently looking for more manufacturers to supply engine components to. Akashi Kikai, which started in July 2015, supplies Perodua with the Electronic Automatic Transmission as well as manual transmission for the Axia and Bezza.

“With both DPEM and Akashi Kikai now online, we are able to offer a comprehensive engine component solution to other (automotive) original equipment manufacturers (OEM),” said Asmat.

Asmat said that DPEM and Akashi Kikai were established to reap the opportunities arising from a fully liberalised automotive market by offering high quality engine components at competitive prices.

“With full liberalisation of the automotive industry imminent; it makes sense to tap into the potential for growth within the ASEAN region where most of the economies located here are looking to flourish over the next few decades. For now, we are focused in making the right first steps; of preparation and improvements and hopefully we will see the returns in a relatively acceptable time-frame,” he said.

Also present at the launch was Perodua President & CEO, YBhg Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh, Executive Vice President of Daihatsu Co. Ltd, Mr Hiroyuki Yokoyama and Managing Director of DPEM Sdn Bhd, Mr Koji Miyake.

2017 Perodua Eco Challenge To Focus On Commercial Value

The Perodua Eco Challenge 2017 (PEC 2017), one of Perodua’s main Corporate Responsibility programs, invites institutions of higher learning to propose the best innovative components which might be incorporated into the company’s future models.

“The PEC 2017 is very unique and comes with a new format as we need them to create a part of a car that includes the element of ECO (Environment, Creativity and Originality) which will be considered to be included in our new models,” Perodua President & Chief Executive Officer, Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh said.

Started in 2009, the Perodua Eco Challenge offers students and faculty members from local institutions of higher learning an avenue to show their creativity in terms of design, engineering and business prowess against their peers from different institutions.

Dr Aminar, Perodua President & CEO, Perodua Eco Challenge 2017 - CopyBetween 2009 and 2013 the Perodua Eco Challenge was focused on the redesigning of existing Perodua models then to building up a new car and marketing it, with fuel efficiency as the main objective for the participating institutions of higher learning.

Typically, the theme of the PEC during this time was more distance-race oriented. For 2017, there is more of a parts development theme incorporated into the challenge as the institutions of higher learning will focus more on research and development and will work closely with Perodua’s R&D team as well as vendors to produce prototype components.

A total of 21 institutions of higher learning were invited to participate in the Perodua Eco Challenge in November 2016 of which 10 were chosen today to compete for PEC 2017.

Perodua is giving a small seed grant to develop the ideas for the institutions and by April 2017, these 10 institutions will work with Perodua R&D as well as vendors to produce the prototype for a final assessment. “These ideas must incorporate the ‘unique Malaysia’ element in their designs as to make them truly stand out from other model offerings,” Datuk (Dr) Aminar said.

The role of the Perodua R&D and vendors would be to advise and educate the institutions of higher learning on the importance of proper work culture, procedures and processes. “We believe that this will be a great help to both the institutions and students as they could incorporate these processes in their education and work-life environment,” Datuk (Dr) Aminar said.

Once the prototype is completed, the component will be reviewed by a team of judges next December. Scoring is given on a stage basis, where the institutions will be evaluated based on their progress and team participation.

“The PEC’s core idea is to empower youths through education and we believe adding “real-world” elements such as competition and actual processes in developing a global business mind-set are essential for a vibrant as well as innovative nation,” Datuk (Dr) Aminar said.

Perodua’s 2016 Market Share Hits All-Time High

Perodua had a good 2016, selling over 207,100 vehicles and with a total industry volume of 579,600 units last year, this puts Perodua’s market share at approximately 35.7% – the highest market share in the compact carmaker’s history.

Perodua President & CEO YBhg Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh“Despite 2016 being a challenging year, we are pleased to announce that all our models; from the Bezza to the Alza; are number one in their respective categories,” Perodua President & CEO, Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh said.

“Despite being launched in July, we are happy to announce that the Bezza sold over 36,000 units for 2016, making it the number one compact sedan in the ‘A’ segment. We wish to thank the Malaysian public for their trust and endorsement of our brand, we will continue to further improve ourselves for your motoring needs” he added.

Subsequent to achieving an estimated market share of 35.7% for 2016, Perodua is the country’s most preferred automotive brand for 11 years running. On the total industry volume for 2017, Perodua sees a slight improvement with a 2% growth to 590,000 units, from 579,600 in 2016.

“Based on this projection, we target to capture 34% of the market share or to sell 202,000 vehicles in 2017. The market has been challenging for 2016 due to a tough market where consumers were still adjusting to challenging economic condition, the prudent lending guidelines and the stiff competition by nearly all auto players.” Datuk Aminar said.

Despite the tough sales environment locally, Perodua grew its export volume by 6% in 2016 to 4,700 units from 4,400 units in 2015; with over 60% of its exports are to Indonesia.

On profitability, Aminar said that Perodua would focus more on its after-sales for revenue growth. “We are investing more in our after-sales business to further improve our earnings. In fact, 2016 saw many records being made with over 2 million vehicles visiting our service centres nationwide,” Datuk Aminar said. Perodua recorded a service revenue of RM 682 million compared with RM 600 million in 2015.

Perodua also produced fewer vehicles in 2016 i.e. 213,000 vs 229,000 in 2015, as a result of the softer market. “The reduction in production is in-line with the reduced sales in 2016. For 2017, we foresee production to be further reduced to 197,000 which is reflective of our sales target for the year,” Datuk Aminar said.

Some like it, and some have nothing good to say about it but the Perodua Myvi is undeniably one of the most practical and attractively packaged compact cars in the market. And rolling out the 1 millionth Myvi off the production line is testament to its popularity.

The Perodua Myvi was launched in 2005 and stayed as the top-seller in the country until the end of 2014; it still remains one of the bestsellers and is Perodua’s most-produced model.

“The Perodua Myvi has set a new standard for us in terms of products offerings as well as customer expectations and it is our benchmark for all our future models,” Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer, Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh said.

Last weekend, Perodua held a special “line-off” ceremony at its manufacturing facility in Sungai Choh, Rawang officiated by Perodua Auto Corporation Sdn Bhd (PCSB) President, Mr Masanori Takahashi and PCSB Vice President, Dato’ Zainal Abidin Ahmad.

“Also, based on our internal calculations – all our models, the Myvi, Alza, Axia and Bezza retain their spot as the most preferred vehicles in their respective segments. We wish to thank all Malaysians for their support,” Aminar added.

Perodua sold 81,900 vehicles in the first 5 months of 2017 which represents a 5.9% year-on-year increase (from 77,300 units).

“We estimate that the total industry volume for the first 5 months of the year to be 233,700 units. Based on this number, our market share for the year so far is at 35%,” Aminar said.

Although the company’s priority is still to fulfill local demand, Perodua has been exporting the Myvi since 2006 to countries like Mauritius, Brunei, Singapore, the United Kingdom, Fiji and Nepal. Further, the Myvi is also exported to Indonesia as the Daihatsu Sirion; its biggest foreign market with nearly 31,000 units sold since 2007. Total exports of the Myvi / Sirion since 2006 amounts to 35,400 units.

Perodua Records Slight Increase In Sales For 1H2017

The headline doesn’t come as a surprise, despite the soft market conditions, as consumers have a tendency to ‘buy down’ in times of weak sentiment and tight credit. For the first 6 months of 2017, Perodua moved out 99,700 vehicles compared to 97,400 for the same period in 2016 (a 2.4% increase). The Axia (32,600) continues to be its biggest seller followed by Bezza (28,300) and Myvi (24,000).

Perodua Axia Gear Up GreenAnd as expected, all its models are volume leaders in their respective segments. Perodua estimates it’s current market share to be 35.1% based on its estimate of total industry volume (TIV) of 284,200 in the first 6 months.

“Also based on our internal observation, the total industry volume has improved by 2.3% to 284,200 for the first half of 2017,” said Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid, Perodua President and CEO.

Perodua Bezza Gear Up AccessoriesAminar attributes this increase to aggressive sales campaigns by almost all automotive brands, as well as new model introductions.

However, despite this improvement, Perodua remains cautiously optimistic as the tight lending guidelines is still seen as a great challenge. The company projects an annual sales target of 202,000 vehicles this year, down from last year’s figure of 207,100.

Nonetheless, Perodua will continue to offer attractive promotions to maintain its sales levels. It will also focus on improving after-sales to get more Perodua owners to return to its service centers after warranty ends, as another income stream. Its service centers have seen a 1.2% increase in vehicle intake in the first half of 2017 (1.02 million vs 1.01 million in 1H2016).

20170717_000713“We are encouraged by the support shown to us by the general public; for the immediate future, we welcome the public to visit our showrooms to know more about our current promotions,” Aminar commented.

At the same time, the company has announced the establishment of a Pre-Owned Vehicles sales center that is expected to be launched in the 4th quarter, in the Klang Valley.

Also announced is the 12th anniversary celebration of the popular Myvi which will see the offer of up to RM 7,500 cash givebacks, and also a cash prize of up to RM 12,000.

On its export sales, Perodua shipped 1,854 vehicles to 6 countries (the largest being Indonesia for which Perodua assembles the Daihatsu Sirion (Myvi) for).

In terms of capital expenditure, Perodua is looking at a 15% increase this year to RM 557 million, as it continues to modernize its 2 assembly plants and expand outlets. Since one of them has already been modernized and assembling its current energy efficient vehicle (EEV) models, there’s speculation that this capex isn’t just for modernizing the older plant but for 2 new models, with one being new to its current line-up.

The local sporting scene (and even some international ones) has been in dire need of sponsorship ever since some major advertisers/sponsors had been disallowed to continue funding sports and thus left a huge void. But the sport of badminton has a new hope with Daihatsu Motor Co., Ltd. which is contributing to the
development of badminton in Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Daihatsu has announced its sponsorship of 2 Badminton World Federation (BWF) major tournaments, which is expected to attract the world’s leading players i.e. the DAIHATSU Indonesia Master 2018, and the PERODUA Malaysia Masters 2018 presented by Daihatsu (since they supply the technology to Perodua). The company had also sponsored the DAIHATSU YONEX JAPAN OPEN 2017 which was held in late September, where some of the top-ranked players duked it out. Based on the Daihatsu Group Slogan, “Light You Up,” this sponsorship is part of the company’s KOTODUKURI activities that focus on broadening interaction with customers and local communities.

Badminton is considered a national sport in Indonesia and Malaysia, 2 countries where Daihatsu has a close affinity with the local communities. Hence, Daihatsu’s decision to support badminton in these countries as a means of supporting the local communities in these countries in ways other than MONODUKURI.

Indonesia and Malaysia are where Daihatsu have their main overseas operations to develop affordable high-quality, low-cost, fuel-efficient mini vehicles catered to these markets.

Daihatsu intends to support the Japanese National Badminton and Para-Badminton Teams and at the same time, actively promote the development of the next generation of players through its sponsorship of the All Japan Elementary School ABC Tournament as well as other local events.

Despite a slight year-on-year increase of 0.5% for its 9-month results, Perodua is confident of maintaining its 2017 sales target projection of 202,000 vehicles. For the first 9 months ending 30 September 2017, the company sold 151,600 vehicles, up from 150,600 the year before. And although it saw year-on-year sales slow slightly in the 3rd quarter (from 53,500 to 51,900 vehicles), the company remains cautiously optimistic of achieving its targets.

The increase in 3Q2016 sales was due to the demand for the Perodua Bezza, which was launched in late July 2016, and its expectations to meet its target this year is due to its new initiatives planned for the remaining quarter of the year.

Perodua President & CEO Datuk Dr Aminar Rashid Salleh 1H16 Review“The larger sales number in the third quarter last year was due to the then newly introduced Perodua Bezza. That impact has normalized now and our sales have benefited from the model’s introduction,” Perodua President and Chief Executive Officer, Datuk (Dr) Aminar Rashid Salleh said.

Datuk (Dr) Aminar said challenges for the fourth quarter of 2017 include challenging approvals for hire-purchase loans and expected intense competition from other auto brands.

“The fourth quarter is expected to be challenging but we believe that we can sustain our sales momentum and are cautiously optimistic in meeting our earlier set target of 202,000 vehicles by the end of 2017,” he said. Datuk (Dr) Aminar said that on a year-to-date basis, all Perodua models were best-sellers in their respective categories.

Perodua Axia SE FrontThe Axia remains the country’s best-selling A-segment compact hatch with 48,700 units sold in the first 9 months of 2017. This is followed by the Perodua Myvi which is the national B-segment hatch leader with 42,000 units. The Perodua Bezza, the best-selling compact A-segment sedan, saw 39,800 units delivered and the Perodua Alza, the best-selling MPV, 21,400 units.

“We wish to thank all Malaysians for their trust in our brand and we will continue to improve ourselves; both in our products and our services to serve you better,” Datuk (Dr) Aminar said.

On the company’s after-sales performance, Datuk (Dr) Aminar said the service intake (the number of vehicles patronising Perodua service centers) has increased by 4.6% to 1.58 million in the first 9 months of 2017, compared to 1.51 million for the same period last year.

Perodua Global Manufacturing Sdn Bhd Official Opening AssemblyAs for its manufacturing side, Perodua produced 147,900 vehicles in the first 9 months of 2017, down 3.8% compared with 153,700 units last year. This was a planned reduction as some of the vehicle stock was produced in the fourth quarter of 2016 in response to the expected higher exchange rate in the first quarter of 2017.

Is The New Perodua Myvi Geared Up To Shift The Paradigm?

Perodua Myvi Gear Up 2017 MalaysiaIt’s all over the news and I’m sure you have seen enough pictures and read enough articles on the new Perodua Myvi that you probably know it better than you know your best friend. But on the off-chance that you missed the news, Perodua just launched the 3rd generation Myvi yesterday.

The first Myvi changed the game for Perodua, and the Malaysia car market 12 years ago. It came into the market at a time when sedans were dominant and stole some thunder from many an entry-level model, foreign brands included, because it offered fuss-free mobility in a budget-friendly package. It was the first car purchase for some, and a secondary car for the household for others, and thus had a wide target segment. And it looks like Perodua is intending to continue this trend of being ‘mass-market-friendly’.

Perodua Myvi 1.5 L Engine, Malaysia 2017Perodua’s new Myvi continues to be powered by 1.3L and 1.5L engines. The 1.3L is the 1NR-VE engine that’s also found in the Perodua Bezza. The 1.5L is the 2NR-VE engine similar to that in the Toyota Avanza. Both engines feature Dual VVT-i (variable valve timing – intelligent). The 1.3L produces 94 hp and 121 Nm while the 1.5L produces 102 hp and 136 Nm.

These 2 engines are found in 5 variants – 1.3L Standard G manual (RM 44,300), 1.3L Standard G auto (RM 46,300), 1.3L Premium X auto (RM 48,300), 1.5L High auto (RM 51,800) and 1.5L Advance auto (RM 55,300).

But the impact of the new Myvi isn’t so much of how Perodua has benefited from the technical partnership with Daihatsu Motor Co. by tapping onto Daihatsu’s available platforms and powertrains, nor is it the initiative of Perodua to design its own upper body and interior (with guidance from Daihatsu) to develop local design expertise instead of adapting an existing Daihatsu model, it’s how Perodua has provided new benchmarks in the entry-level segment which will send ripples upwards.

Perodua Myvi LED Headlights 2017 Launch MalaysiaBecause, standard across all Myvi variants are features like LED headlights with ‘follow-me-home’ function, LED rear combination lamps with light guides, keyless entry with push button start, digital aircon controls, front & rear seat belt reminder, Anti-lock Braking System with Electronic Brake-force Distribution, and Vehicle Stability Control. Further, the 1.3L variants get 4 airbags, and the 1.5L, 6 airbags.

The above are common features found mainly in higher priced cars, but uncommon in their basic spec variants.

From the Myvi 1.3L Premium X onward, the cars get the Eco Idle function and Hill Start Assist. The 1.5L models also have an integrated toll card reader i.e. an internal Smart Tag.

A.S.A. - Perodua Myvi 1.5L Advance, MalaysiaFurther pushing the goalpost is the Advanced Safety Assist (ASA) available only in the 1.5L Advance variant. This is a suite of safety features which include Pre-Collision Warning (PCW), Pre-Collision Braking (PCB), Front Departure Alert (FDA), and Pedal Misoperation Control (PMC).

PCW is an alert system which assesses collision risk and alerts the driver (this works between speeds of 4 km/h – 30 km/h). If the driver doesn’t react, PCB will step in to assist in stopping the car (it will not work if the steering is turned). Depending on your speed, PCB may not completely avoid a collision, but reduce the damage.

FDA alerts the driver when the vehicle in front has moved, and the Myvi is still stationary. This is a useful feature for those who are preoccupied with their phones when in traffic, to be less of an annoyance to the cars queued up behind.

PMC is an accident mitigation feature when the wrong pedal is depressed, or the wrong gear is used. For example, instead of selecting ‘R’ to reverse out of a parking lot, you engaged ‘D’ and step on the throttle making the car move forward instead of backwards. If there is a wall in front, PMC will detect it and suppress the throttle allowing you take come to your senses and take necessary action. In a similar scenario, you might have stepped on the wrong pedal (gas instead of brake) and likewise, PMC will act if it detects an obstacle/wall in front.

The ASA features are dependent on a forward-facing stereo camera which like the human eye, can be hindered by bright sunlight, darkness and bad weather. What the Perodua Myvi has is a basic system that acts as a driving aid and is not meant to take control of risky situations. The onus to pay attention and react is still on the human driver.

Nonetheless, the Myvi is the only car with such features that doesn’t cost over RM 100,000. And with the features listed earlier as standard kit, there’s a chance we might hear “If Perodua can, why can’t you?” at other showrooms.

Perodua Myvi 1.5L Advance AV Rear View Malaysia LaunchBefore the official launch, Perodua had announced that it had already received 5,000 bookings for the new Myvi, with 78% of them for the 1.5L variants. More bookings are expected over this weekend as the car has been revealed and available in showrooms for viewing.

As to how successful this new Myvi is, it will depend on the actual sales figures Perodua will reveal in due course. But judging from the reaction from the guests at the launch who aren’t from dealerships or media, we think it will be another home run for the company.
